The photographs in this gallery are from the Fall of 2022 but this post is being made in January of 2024. In the age of Covid-19 when travels had been cancelled and life put on hold, this trip was enthusiastically anticipated, perhaps a bit too soon, as we find out. The plan was to go Denali in Alaska, then Dawson City in the Yukon from where we would pick up a special car for a once-in-a-lifetime trek up the Dempster Highway to Inuvik in the Northwest Territory.
We managed the first two legs of that trip, but somewhere along the way Covid-19 caught up with us and by Dawson City we were obliged to forgo the trip up the Dempster. And so, that still awaits us.
Difficulties working on the computer alerted me to the fact that it was time to have cataract surgery and so in 2023, that decision was made. That’s how I arrived at a posting of 2022 photos in 2024.
The good news is the timing of our trip to the northwest of the continent turned out to be perfect, in terms of the fall colours which were resplendent. Not all falls are created equal. The conditions have to right for the colours to bedazzle. And the timeline is usually short, maybe a week or possibly two. I can happily share that we landed in Denali at the right time.
The bad news is that the road to the middle the park was closed to vehicular traffic because floods had washed out a bridge. However, a bus could be taken that would get us to the fifteen mile point, beyond which one had to be a registered camper. So that’s what we did.
I hope you will agree that the countryside was putting on quite the show with dramatic skies foretelling storms and brilliant sunshine in the midst of rainfall. Please join in taking a glimpse at the splendours of Denali in the Fall.

Your photography of Denali Splendours is beautiful. This helps to soften the unexpected experiences that beset you and your travel companions.
Will continue to follow your work.
Carolyn, as always, I appreciate your comments. Getting to the processing of these photos was like taking the trip all over again – one good by-product of leaving it this long.
Such striking photos!
Thank you, Anita. The scenery was truly striking, as you say. I’m glad the photos say that to you.
How I wish I could have been with you all on that trip (except, obviously, for the Covid)! It truly looks as if it was an unforgettable experience. The photographs are gorgeous and, as I can’t get there myself, they will take me there in my imagination.
Thanks so much for sharing.
Ellie, I wish you there on every trip, but this one was special insofar as the timing allowed this particularly colourful side of Denali to be captured. Feel free to visit whenever the spirit moves you. Thank you for your gracious comment.
Wonderful pictures. Brings back memories of our trip. Too bad Covid had to get us. I’d love to return there. You had so many to choose from.
Thanks, Alison. Processing these photos was like doing the trip all over again. Agreed, it would be nice to go back there. No guarantee that we’d see colours like that again though.
Absolutely stunning Janet! What a wonderful excursion to be part of that landscape to the north!
The colours are such rich treasures indeed!
Mary, thanks so much for your kind words. I love the North country. Our timing was bang on to experience these colours. Pure luck! No guarantee that we’d see those colours a second time around. So, very special indeed.
