The photos in this gallery were taken over three days in the Fall of 2022. At first we just did walks around the visitors centre which took us through the forests and to visit the Huskies who are permanent residents of the park. We’d heard about the new litter of puppies but it must have been nap time when we got there because all the dogs were sleeping – the adults mostly atop their houses and the pups somewhere inside their enclosure.
The second day, we went to one of the mountain walks accessible by private vehicle. The weather was threatening rain, with sporadic cloudbursts happening as we walked…but in between the cloudbursts were bright wonderful sun bursts. All served to persuade the landscape to put on its gloriously coloured attire. I could not believe my luck. Everywhere the hills and valleys were awash in a brilliant display as I’ve tried to capture for you here. My understanding in that this does not happen every year and when it does, it last maybe a week at best. So, as I’ve learned in life, timing is everything. That evening, returning back to our lodge with seeing only one moose loose in the foliage at a distance, we arrived to find a mother moose and her twins feeding on some bushes at the edge of the parking lot – up close and personal – a very exciting end to the day.
The next day we took the bus tour which allowed us to reach the 15 mile point beyond which only registered campers can venture. Everyone on the bus was admonished to watch for, and inform the rest of us, any wildlife. Mostly we saw the odd moose and the occasional mountain sheep. However, the weather was still doing its best to show off the natural beauty and we came away completely awed by the Fall Splendour of the Denali
